Metal Gear Solid is lowkey super rad

Not for any of the reasons that is obvious though

Metal Gear Solid is one of those francheises that is you're in on it, it's super funny and ironic - almost. Kojima (creator) is a funny guy and it seems like he somehow manages to blend the line between serious and downright ludicris pretty well. There's also a charm in the series of everything that happens is just fucking rad. The opening of MGS 3: Snake Eater has Naked Snake doing the worlds first HALO jump out of an airplane to rescue a defected scientist. Awesome and feels cool, but just twenty minutes later, you meet the most reaccuring character in the series, Revolver Ocelot, who can bounce bullets are corners and calls his allies by mimicing a jungle cat's call. This example just goes to show how well this balance of rad stuff and weird, but funny, humor shows up throughout the games.

Hardcore Heroes - Ian MacKaye

Minor Threat is a legendary band by itself, but Fugazi too??

For the first installment of Hardcore Heroes, I'd like to talk about the man himself, Ian MacKaye - frontman for both Minor Threat and Fugazi. Minor Threat, although coming along at a later time than some of the other early hardcore bands, really set the scene up for greatness. The raw sound of the band displayed everything that punk could be and with lyrics that helped define the genre. Although some like to mock the straight edge movement that Minor Threat helped popularize, all those people are losers, being straight edge has a lot to say about self-discipline, along with a little pretentiousness that I would like to think is allowed. Once Minor Threat broke up, Ian didn't stop, he just kept going. Fugazi is the band that Ian is most well known for, and for a reason. 13 Songs is the greatest hardcore album to ever exist and is one of my favorite albums of all time. It's really a step up from Minor Threat, growing muscially from a raw, hardcore, headbanging feel to music that can tell a story without lyrics. The message is each song is also just fantastic, always something that is relatable across generations and something real. A lot of music is just unrelatable to be frank, what if I don't have some woman to cry over? Or I don't make a bunch of money as a rockstar? I don't even know what U2 is talking about most of the time, but everyone can relate to common Fugazi messages of waiting for something big to happen, or being mind-numbingly bored, or even frusterated at people who don't know what the fuck they're talking about. All of that is centered before some of the most raw instrumentation to exist on an album. All of this, and more, is what makes Ian MacKaye such a legend. Go check out 13 Songs right now, you won't be disappointed.

About

Hello! My name is Jack O, I am a 23 year old guy who is trying to get into journalism and thought that this website would be a good way to both practice writing and get some ideas out there. I'm a little unsure of what I am going to be writing about in the first place, so I thought it was fitting to name this JackO's ramblings. I may change the URL in the future for the basic reason of only wanting people I know reading this things, but for right now, who cares. If any one has any suggestions, please reach out! I suspect that everyone reading this will have access to some of my contact info, so I look forward to hearing from you!
